Brass Hex Nipples have a hex nut in the middle of the fitting so you can get a wrench on it for tightening. Whereas Close Nipples are threaded from end to end and do not have a nut in the middle. Brass Pipe Hex Nipples are tapered MPT and can be used to join 2 (two) female Threaded items together or to convert a Female Pipe Threaded item to a Male Pipe threaded item. As with any Pipe Thread Fitting, Teflon Tape should be used not only to help seal the fitting from leaking, but as a lubricant to help the inherently tapered threads to tighten and mash together to complete the no leak seal. Brass Hex Nipples are often used on water filters, water regulators, or any FPT Thread.
