Brass Hex Nipples have a hex nut shape in the middle of the fitting so you can get a wrench on it for tightening. Close Nipples are threaded from end to end and do not have a nut in the middle. As with any Pipe Thread, Teflon Tape should be used not only to help seal, but as a lubricant to help the inherently tapered threads tighten and "mash" together for the "no leak" seal. Brass Pipe Hex Nipple MPT can be used to join 2 (two) female Threaded items together or to convert a Female Pipe Threaded item to a Male Pipe threaded item. Often used on water filters, water regulators, or any FPT Thread.
