The Omnipure ELF-XL Softening Resin Filter is an extra-large format (ELF) water filter cartridge designed primarily for commercial food service, specialty brewing, and high-volume residential applications to reduce water hardness and prevent scale deposits. The Omnipure ELF-XL-SOFTENER Water Filter aka ELF-XL-ALL-UXC-8SF Cation Exchange Resin Cartridge is also known as the EWS Espresso Machine Water Softening Cartridge. It is a cation exchange softening cartridge which reduces hardness and scale deposits. It attaches to any permanent ELF-Series Head.

Maintenance Tip:
Because these filters rely on cation exchange resin, their true lifespan dictates heavily on your local water profile. If your incoming water hardness is exceptionally high (above 10 grains per gallon), the softening capacity will deplete much faster than standard sediment or carbon filters. Watch out for early signs of scale buildup on your equipment or decreased soap lathering as cues that the cartridge needs a swap. In some situations a Phosphate feeder filter may be a better option for protecting your equipment.
